Department: Fishes

Reports To: Supervisor/Senior Aquarist or Aquarist

General Aim: Assist the Fishes staff with the day-to-day husbandry duties for the exhibits, reserve tanks and support areas.

Principal Intern Duties and Responsibilities:
Check specimens, exhibits, and reserve tanks each morning and evening for specimen health and operation of fish systems.
Prepare daily ration of frozen, fresh and dry commercial foods.
Maintain detailed husbandry and medical records including daily reports in assigned husbandry areas and input data via computers onto spreadsheets and/or databases.
Assist in enclosure and exhibit maintenance including live food cultures, cleaning, life support systems, filters, pumps, heaters, etc., and exhibit renovations.
Ability to take accurate measurements and record data in an understandable manner.
Ability to work safely under a variety of working conditions.
Provide a written summary of your internship.
Accomplish other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications and Specifications:
Currently enrolled or recent graduate of a college or university bachelor's degree program in the biological sciences, preferably with course work in ichthyology and other aquatic sciences.
Must be 18 years old.
Must have a TB test within the last 12 months.
Must have a valid drivers license.
Must have good hearing, visual acuity, verbal and written communicative skills and be able to regularly lift at least 50 pounds.
Interns may be assigned special scheduling needs throughout the week, including weekends. A minimum commitment of 16 hrs/ week to a maximum of 40 hrs/ week.

Application deadlines are:
April 15th, July 15th and November 15th -- every year. For the year 2000 will we be accepting applications for the fall through the 20th of September.

Internship Dates:
Internships vary in length and starting date. All internships typically are a minimum of 8 weeks and do not exceed 16 weeks. Starting dates typically are in January, May and September.
