Illinois Teachers Get in Free
Even if you have visited before, it is often helpful to "take in the scenery"
minus a group, allowing you time to discover for yourself the treasures to share with
your students. Take advantage of free admission by bringing your Illinois teacher
identification.
Store Discount
Are you looking for materials for your classroom? Puppets, videos, teacher guides,
animal models, books and software are all available in our two retail stores, Go
Overboard! and Big Blue. Remember to present your school I.D. for your 20 percent
educator's discount.
Focus the Trip
Set a realistic goal for what you would like your students gain from the trip.
Umbrella topics (camouflage, adaptations, etc.) greatly aid in focusing students'
attention. Use the activity guides available with your confirmation, or create your
own tailored to your students' needs.
Prepare Students
Your trip will have more meaning for your students if it reinforces ideas introduced
in the classroom. Seeing these ideas exhibited up close and personal will help
learning come alive.
Prepare Your Chaperones
Chaperones can't help reach the goals set for the visit if they don't know what
they are. If you plan to use the Aquarium Adventures, feel free to photocopy enough
for each chaperone.
Good to Know..
Admission for a self-guided Oceanarium visit includes both the Aquarium and
Oceanarium.
The time of your reservation is your entrance time into the Oceanarium, it does
not indicate the start time of the dolphin presentation.
Reservations for an Aquarium-only visit do not include visiting the Oceanarium
(where the dolphins and whales are located).
Coat-check facilities are not available for self-guided groups.
Lunch facilities may be available for self-guided groups. Reservations for the
lunchroom must be made when you make your self-guided visit reservation.
All programs and times are subject to availability; associated fees are nonrefundable
and not transferable.
Updates
In May 1999, Shedd Aquarium unveiled its renovated interactive Caribbean Reef. The
new exhibit includes an interpretive station, large-scale video monitors and an
underwater video camera. There are five daily dive presentations.
In the summer of 2000, Shedd unveiled its newest exhibit, Amazon Rising: Seasons
of the River. This attraction shows the yearly cycle of the flood season that the
Amazon River experiences. It also examines how animals, as well as the residents
of the Amazon Basin, adapt to these changing conditions. Amazon Rising features
interactive stations, and unique scenes that give visitors a sense of what Amazon
living is really like!
As part of our exciting future at Shedd, we are creating exhibits that all ages
can enjoy. Our next project is a Philippines exhibit, expected to open in 2003.
