Shedd Aquarium penguin rescue Cape Town, South Africa is about as far form Chicago and Shedd as you can get, at least by commercial airline. Yet Lisa Takaki and Kristi Matthews of the Marine Mammals Department made the 17-hour flight in August to join an international effort to rehabilitate more than 20,000 African penguins in what environmentalists call the world's largest wildlife rescue from an oil spill. |
Shedd Aquarium has an elite corps of 20 full-time marine mammal trainers who are respected throughout the aquarium and zoo professions. They are all graduates of a training program implemented by Ken Ramirez, director of training and husbandry. "We probably have one of the strictest and most comprehensive programs for trainers in the world," says Ramirez.
