I. POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Water-quality volunteer
Supervisor: Chemist
Objective: Performs wet chemical water quality analysis on Aquarium and/or Oceanarium
water samples to ensure a healthy environment for the animal collection.

Maintains written water quality records and disseminates data to department staff

Collects water samples from tanks and systems as directed |

Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- One year of high school chemistry and biology required
- BA or BS in chemistry, biology or related field desirable
- Previous laboratory experience desirable
- Familiarity with basic aquarium water chemistry and testing methods desirable
- Ability to relate to and work with other volunteers in a pleasant and helpful manner
II. UNIFORM
Please refer to the Uniform Section of the Volunteer Handbook. In addition to the
standard uniform policy, laboratory volunteers are encouraged not to wear any jewelrysuch
as earrings, necklaces, bracelets or rings. Laboratory volunteers must also follow
the jewelry and personal appearance policy outlined in the Marine Mammals section
while collecting water samples in the Oceanarium.
III. TRAINING
Laboratory orientation and training is usually held on a Saturday morning from 9:00
to 12:00. More extensive water quality training will occur during the new volunteer's
regular shift following the initial orientation.
IV. DEPARTMENTAL POLICIES
- Food and drink may not be consumed in the laboratory at any time
- Veterinary Services staff must be notified within a reasonable time period if volunteers
will be tardy or absent
- Use of telephones and computers for non-aquarium related business is not allowed unless
Veterinary Services staff grants permission
